The present book contains a detailed analysis of the Indian urbanisation in time.space perspective. Here efforts are made to (I) trace the evolution of spatial picture of Indian urbanisation through history; (ii) describe and interpret the regional variations in urbanisation process during the various decades spanning over the 1901-1981 period; (Ill) examine in a spatial perspective the relationship between the size and growth rate of towns; (IV) regionalise India on the basis of the levels of and trends in urbanisation; (V) make a comparison of the nature of urbanisation that evolved under colonial setting before 1947 with the one that emerged during the post-colonial period following the Independence; (VI) compars the urbanisation experience of India with that of other developing countries; and (VII) test a number of hypothesis on urban growth.
