The present work is a critical study of certain problems of the Muslim minority in India in the context of the country's democratic set-up. The main topics discussed are, the problem of Urdu, the Muslim Personal Law, the Aligarh Muslim University, and Secularism. After scrutinising the views of Muslim moderates and extremists as well as those of the majority community and the position and policy of the Government of India regarding these problems, the author suggests solutions that are in con formity with the contemporary spirit of rationality and the accep ted democratic framework of the country.
In the author's view, national inte gration is a process of becoming a whole.' Negatively, it means the absence of divisive movements while positively it implies the presence of attitudes throughout society that give preference to national and public interests as distinct from parochial and private interests." The author also lays stress on the removal of social and economic hurdles so that the people can advance according to their own genius and culture unfettered and unhampered.
