The book is organised into five sections:
Section 1, covers the basic concepts and issues in economic development, and measures of development and underdevelopment as well as human development. The environment and development is also discussed in this section.
Section 2, looks at the basic features of the Indian economy at independence: composition of national income and occupational structure, the agrarian scene and the industrial structure.
Section 3, discusses policy regimes: the evolution of planning, import-substituting industrialisation, economic reform and liberalisation.
