THE materials contained in this small volume were first presented in a series of public lectures delivered at the University of Bombay in late February and carly March 1962. The purpose was to describe and analyze, in a manner appropriate for a lecture audience, some of the principal issues and problems faced by central banks in countries which are intent on promoting economic growth but have other important economic objectives as well.
