The tribal people of India, who come under the category of Scheduled Tribes in terms of the provisions of the Constitution of India. number 8.43 crore constituting 8.2 per cent of the total population of the country and thus becoming the second largest population in the world, next to Africa. Tribal people are the backbone of our cultural heritage. They live in hilly and forested areas of the country, with poor administrative and infrastructure backup. As they are presumed to constitute the oldest ethnological segment of the population, the term Adivasi (Adi-original and Vasi inhabitant) has become fairly popular. However, the International Labour Organisation has classified them as `indegenous'. The generous heart of a new and resurgent India was expressed in the words of Article 46 of the Indian Constitution: "The State shall promote with special care the educational and economic interests of the weaker sections of the people, and in particular. of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and shall protect them from social injustice and all forms of exploitation." Tribal development, over the years, has been a major concern of the Government. voluntary organizations, social reformers. social scientists. etc. Hence, seeing the importance of the topic the presen work-Tribes Through the Ages has been conceived and put into the four segments: Vol. 1 Speeches and Writings Vol. 2 Speeches and Writings Vol. 3 Documents Vol. 4 Documents It is sincerely hoped that the present work will be widely acknowledged in various academic and social circles.
