Work, union and community : industrial man in South India

Based on intensive fieldwork among textile workers in South India, this study portrays a holistic picture of the industrial worker.
After a century of industrialization, the Indian worker has emerged as a complete industrial man. The study demonstrates the important linkages between their experiences at work, the trade union and the community, and the emergence of values and attitudes which are universally industrial. In spite of this industrialism, they keep one foot firmly in the village and the kin group and have aspirations for themselves and their children which are uniquely Indian. The resultant is a distinctive amalgam of universal industrial values and typically Indian cultural traits. Dr Uma Ramaswamy teaches at Miranda House, University of Delhi.
