Uniting over 100 states, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is an important factor of international life today. The emergence of NAM was a logical development in the new international situation which the world faced after the Second World War as a result of the defeat of Nazi Germany and militarist Japan, the appearance of the world socialist system and the collapse of the colonial empires. Generally speaking, NAM reflects the newly-free nations' aspiration to break away from the imperialist political system, achieve foreign-policy and economic independence, and coordinate their efforts on the inter national scene so as to create favourable international conditions for handling the outstanding domestic socio political and economic problems inherited from colonialism. Non-alignment stands for a policy of friendship towards all the nations, friendship free of the adherence to any military bloc.
