Indian Council and Agriculture Research Krishi Bhavan

An Era of self-sufficiency in food production - New Delhi Indian Council and Agriculture Research Krishi Bhavan 1987 - 278 p.

The period 1966-84 marks a turning-point in Indian agriculture. It ushered in an era when strong foundation was laid in India to develop agriculture on modern scientific lines, leading to self-sufficiency in food production. Such a rapid development was not a matter of chance, but the result of a sustained and meticulous planning and conscious efforts of scientists, extension workers, farmers, administrators and planners-all working in unison, as in a symphony orchestra, whose co-ordinator was Mrs Indira Gandhi. She transformed our agricultural system from a stage of bare subsistence to one above want. The progress made by India in different disciplines of agricultural research and education under her dynamic leadership is briefly described in this book.
