<br/><br/> The eco-systems in the Himalayan regions of the country have been subjected to intolerable stress due to large scale deforestation and rapid decline in vegetative cover. The largest single factor responsible for this inexorable pressure on wood fuels required for domestic energy. There is an urgent need for developing alternate energy systems to save the Himalayas which also implies, in many ways saving the food bowl of the country- the Indo-Gangetic Valley.
