This text builds a bridge for beginning students between econometric theory and the applied work increasingly encount red in academic journals. The book presents, and evaluates critically, two or three pieces of applied econometric research in the major areas of current interest, chosen for their straight forward use of basic techniques. Incorporating sufficient theory to make it self contained, the book has two fundamental aims: to interest the reader in the ways that theory has been used in practice, so that his theoretical knowledge is made relevant; and to build confidence and show that the non-specialist can understand research findings with only a limited vocabulary of techniques.
