Implications of tractorisation for farm employment, productivity and income

Studies on tractor usage in farms conducted in the past failed to provide conclusive evidence on the ben efits of tractor use. While the Draft Plan, 1978-83, emphasi sing employment oriented policies favoured the use of trac tors in selected areas, the sale of tractors continued to increase suggesting that farmers prefer tractors over con ventional energy sources. The present study, covering the three broad agroclimatic regions of India, comprehensively analyses the costs and benefits of alternative choices avail able to the farmers as thrown up by a field survey. It also estimates the direct and indirect employment generated by tractor-use. The impact of tractor use on farm and non farm income of the large and small cultivators is also discussed. The demand for human and animal labour, with and without tractors, has been estimated for Punjab and Haryana and its implication analysed.
The study is divided into two volumes. In Volume 1 the main findings of the survey are presented along with tha methodology while Volume II contains statewise survey data.
