The case of Rajasthan is particularly important because of its peculiar historical patterns, social and com- <br/>munity organization, and system of traditional authority. Before 1947 Rajasthan comprised more than twenty princely states and chiefdoms, popular representation there was severely limited, and political organizations were restricted to the separate constituent political units. The establishment of political parties in such circumstances involved factors of great complexity.
