The background for this book is, in part, travel in more than twenty-five countries on four continents and in forty-nine of our fifty states. So far as possible capital cities and large towns were avoided, and every opportunity was taken to learn as much as possible about geography, land use, agriculture, forestry, conservation, and the attitudes of people toward land and water, and the products they draw from them. This book deals with the most fateful problem of our day, excessive population growth. Every man, woman and child in the world is feeling its pressure one way or another. Unless effective action-now not even in sight-is taken to solve it, it could result in a particularly grim form of death for millions, and the end of civilization as we know it.
