Colonel GEOFFREY WHEELER first wrote this short study in 1960 with the aim of describing the impact of the Russians and their civilization on the Muslim peoples of the eastern republics of the U.S.S.R. (Kazakhstan, Kirgizia, Tadzhikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaydzhan). The study begins with two historical chapters; these are followed by four chapters dealing with the demographic, cultural, social and economic impacts; the last chapter is concerned with the Soviet attitude towards the non- Soviet east. There are two appendixes, one describing the source material used and the other showing the distribution of the Muslim population in the U.S.S.R., and two maps. For this second edition, Chapter IV and Appendix B have been revised in the light of the 1959 Census.
