Summary: The issue of regional dispari ties in development is increas ingly engaging the attention of regional planners, policy makers, economists and geo graphers. The issue assumes special importance in a federal Country like India with mar ked diversities and disparities among the States. This book focuses on the issues pertain ing to regional disparities at the micro level within a meso region in India, namely, Karnataka. This book is more than diag nostic, in that it is a study illustrating the methodology relating to measuring and identifying levels of develop ment, dimensions and typology of backwardness at taluk level. Based on these characteristics, the study brings out homoge neous groups of regions and highlights the importance of forming such regional groups in the context of formulating specific development strate gies Suitable to different groups of regions in order to maximise growth and minimise regional inequalities. Besides the theoretical and methodological framework, the study provides vast data base for formulating block level plans especially for Karnataka.
