The Narmada runs through the heart of India. Rich in history and mythology, she is India's fifth longest and most sacred river after the Ganga. Narmada means one who gives joy.
The turbulent river begins her journey from Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh, flows westward for 1312 kilometers through mostly rural landscape and Gujarat. From source to estuary the Narmada offers numerous fine vistas, some of them sheer poetry. For almost her entire length she is escorted by the Vindhya and Satpura mountain ranges. Difficult to navigate she is the cleanest of all major rivers of India. At the starting point of the modest.
