The Social and Economic Profile of India is an outcome of working on different socio economic studies conducted by Indicus. Thus we would like to acknowledge all of our colleagues and clients who by providing us with an opportunity to understand various facets of India, laid the foundation of this publication. What began as an attempt at 'simplifying the heterogeneity of India for our own comprehension, has taken the form of this present book.
The information contained in this volume draws from Census of India 2001, various surveys conducted by the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO), various government sources, as well as other socio-economic literature. Most of the information included is the latest available as on the date of publication. However those interested in further research are encouraged to check the sources that have been referred to for any further updates. Though this volume is designed to be a desk guide, it can also serve as a first-point reference on the Indian socio-economy.
Professors Bibek Debroy and Devendra B. Gupta have guided us through many studies on India's socio-economy over the past few years, their constant support has been instrumental in our entering this area and continuing in it. Next we would like to thank everyone at Indicus. Mridusmita Bordoloi has been a constant support during the entire gestation period of the book. Amitava Gupta, Siddhartha Dutta, Mandira Jain and Vipin Panwar have helped us with their inputs at crucial moments.
