Social stratification

By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: Delhi, Oxford University Press 1993Description: 518p.-ISBN:
  • 195630882
Subject(s): DDC classification:
  • 303.4 SOC
Summary: Published work on Indian society has grown enormously in recent years. Such writings are not however always readily available. Suitable books of Readings would go a long way in meeting the needs of students, teachers and the general readers, but not many of them exist. Oxford University Press has therefore decided to bring out a series of Readings in sociology and social anthropology in order to fill this gap. The volumes in this Series cover a wide range of themes. Some, such as social stratification, kinship, religion and politics are of crucial significance in defining the distinctiveness of society and culture in India. Others, such as population, socio-economic development and environment highlight contemporary concerns. The Series does not try to provide an exhaustive guide to the literature on the discipline. It does however strive to introduce the subject to the interested reader, capturing nuances of theoretical debate and diversities of approach in each area of study.
