Integrated rural development has become a national slogan and the main instruments proposed for its implementation are science and technology. The rural poor, of late, constitute an abiding concern with politicians and administrators alike. Integrated rural development is one form of response to this concern in which development is the objective, integration the method and rural the focus. The whole approach is poor oriented, which has not been spelt out in any concrete terms, nebulous in form but ambitious in content. Hence this attempt.
In this monograph, we have presented a kaleidoscopic view of the slow and silent revolution which has been going on in the countryside over the years. Starting with the approaches wading through community development, co-operatives panchayati raj and other programmes of rural development, we are presenting a broad framework within which the thrust of integrated rural development can be felt more effectively. We have tried to capsulize the multifarious aspects of the new slogan, giving it a perspective. It is a synoptic view of currents and crosscurrents which have been blowing through the villages in one season or the other.
