Summary: In the debate on large dams in India the Tehri dam has been in the forefront for several years. Realising the environmental and social implication of such a major project in the sensitive mid- Himalaya, the central Government under the direction of the former of prime minister, appointed a Working group in March 1980 to assess and report on its environmental impact. This Group submitted an interim report in May 1980 and its final report in August 1986. During this period several experts from different relevant disciplines have given their independent assessment of the project.
