India is a vast and ancient country. No force other than the will of the people can bring about unity within it. By its very nature, hardline Hindutva cannot generate such a will, whereas liberal Hindutva can—and indeed has done so on several occasions in the past. In a narrow sense, Hinduism is not a political religion defined by specific doctrines or organizational structures; yet, major efforts to forge unity in the nation's history have drawn inspiration from it and utilized it as a primary vehicle. The great conflict between liberalism and orthodoxy within Hinduism can also be viewed as a struggle between the forces of national unity and those of fragmentation. Hindutva, on its own, could not fully resolve the issue. The principle of "unity in diversity" harbors the seeds of both cohesion and fragmentation. Apart from hardline elements—which frequently infiltrate liberal Hindu thought and obstruct the process of intellectual clarity—the principle of unity in diversity fosters a mindset that is simultaneously rich and passive. This book sheds light on significant aspects such as the historical background of the caste system, the phases of subjugation, independence, and resurgence, the root causes of the caste problem, and issues concerning marginalized castes and language.
