Popularly known as J.P., his father was a revenue officer in Bihar's canal department, his mother was an orthodox religious lady. Born on 11 October 1902, a rebel child of his times, he symbolized the spirit of uncompromising resistance to foreign rule. By 1946 his popularity was second only to Jawaharlal Nehru and even higher among students. J.P. was sent to prison during emergency in 1975. He enjoyed no political power after independence. His life was indeed a selfless sacrifice for freedom of his country and its sustainable development.
