In India the intellectual was born during the hey-day of the British rule which introduced modernity into society. Later it was the intellectual who roused the people to fight for political freedom. And finally, after independence, it was he who acquired the responsibility of ruling the country.
This book attempts to examine the nature of the rise of the Indian intellectual and his triumph against his social and cultural background. It is not addressed to scholars and specialists. It is primarily meant for such general intellectual readers as are concerned with the crisis deepening at the heart of contemporary Indian society.
