This book is a short, comprehensive account of all the aboriginal tribes of the Indian sub-continent. The aboriginal tribes are divided into five separate geographical groups: the tribes of northern India, the nomadic tribes of the plains of northern India, the tribes of central India, the tribes of eastern India and the tribes of southern India.
The different tribes are first described in general, followed by the common features of their economy, their social structure (marriage, family and clan systems), their political organisation and religious and magic beliefs. In conclusion, the special features of each tribe are recorded.
The two introductory chapters describe the prehistory of India and the origin of the aboriginal tribes and other peoples of India. The efforts of the Government towards the welfare and acculturation of the tribals are described in the - concluding chapter.
