Future of joint-stock enterprise in India

Summary: In this work I have attempted to set out in simple terms certain salient characteristics of joint-stock enterprise. The study is largely descriptive more in the nature of land scape painting of one aspect of the Indian scene, faithful and true to colours rather than profound. I have selected a wide canvass to give a broad perspective. This is because I have set myself the task of addressing the general reader and not the specialist. My object has been to give a comprehensive and coherent view of the world of joint-stock enterprise as presently unfolding in India against the background of industrial development of advanced countries. A clearer understanding of this subject appears to me of much practical value in ensuring rapid industrial progress. This introduction will, I hope, pave the way for fuller studies on the various aspects which I have touched. I am however well aware of the slight and even sketchy treat ment in many places and of the many failings and deficiencies of this book. Without the mine of statistical and other information which the Reserve Bank of India is now able provide in its numerous publications on which I have freely drawn, this study would not have been possible for me. I have brought together in the various Appendices considerable statistical information which may be of interest. I am most grateful to Sir A. Ramaswami Mudaliar for so kindly and readily agreeing, in the midst of his numerous engagements, to my request to write a foreword for this study.
