It has been at the suggestion of numerous friends and colleagues that author have added, to this third edition of the book, a full chapter on "Gandhi and Contemporary Political Thought". This addition, in the opinion of these friends, is a natural link in, and the culmination of, the discussion in the chapters on "Theories of Alienation and "Theories of Political Development" in Part III of the book. Gandhi takes to the problems of alienation and under-development, not passively, nor violently, but through an activist, non-violent approach and offers solutions which can bring about a lasting change in the character of the individual as well as the society, with full confidence in the potentiality of both to rise to great heights
