This series is based on the assumption that every instructor has his own ideas about the particular social problems that should receive treatment in a course on the subject. Any conventional text-and there are a number worthy of respect-prepackages the subject matter, so to speak. The instructor must either deal exclusively with those problems covered or skip some and introduce others through additional assigned readings. With this series, the instructor packages a social problems text to suit his needs. He selects those volumes which, in his judgment, should make up the course content. Each book covers one problem and stands by itself, de pendent upon no cumulative carryover from any preceding volume.
There are several additional advantages in using a series of volumes rather than a single social problems text. In a series, a number of sociologists make separate contributions. Each is a specialist in his assigned subject. He can cover it in greater depth than would be possible were he limited to a single chapter of a conventional text. And since a variety of authors are represented, the student is exposed to different orientations. At the same time, each volume shares a common conceptual framework.
