Summary, etc. | Many of us have become accustomed to the belief that the common source of useful fresh water on our earth is from rivers, streams, and lakes. There is a major source of water i.e. ground water which is just ignored since it is less obvious being underground. Nevertheless, the underground water is extremely important. It is also important to note that at any one point of time less than 3% of the available fresh water on our planet is stored above the ground, and more than 97% is stored below the ground.

Surface water by virtue of its occurrence is more easily understood. ground water on the other hand, owing to its hidden nature, is shrouded with mystery and superstition.

In this book "GROUND WATER", I have made sincere attempts to

make the readers to have a fair knowledge on the Ground Water Hydrology.

The topics have been so chosen to keep the ground water no more buried. It is made simple and plain with various worked out examples, besides crisp narration of each of the topics. The origin, occurrence and movement of water, methods of ground water exploration, exploitation, extraction, estimation, pumping test analysis, usage of coefficients., water quality, artificial recharge, sea water

intrusion, rain water harvesting, remote sensing techniques in ground water

investigation etc. have all been discussed in detail with examples wherever

necessary.

In preparing this book. I have made attempts to bring together informations and materials from a variety of sources. I have endeavoured to give proper credit under the heading bibliography and references for the direct use of materials from these sources and any omission of such credit is unintentional.

Anybody in the field of Geology, Hydrogeology or Agricultural Water Engineering will find this book of immense use with about 400 figures including ready graphs to scale. I have also furnished a number of tables for the guidance of the readers.

I wish to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to all persons who have offerred valuable comments, suggestions and assistance and whe have spent their time to revise the manuscript. I wish to congradulate and thank the printer Mr. Jegannathan of K.J. Graph Arts for Printing this book in the most attractive form.
|
