Summary, etc. | This volume, the first in the series, sets out to initiate a unique collaboration of experts from environmental and behavioural sciences in this hitherto much less recognised aspect of analysis or study on rural development of the Himalaya. It seeks to analyse and discuss in depth the distinctive features of the Himalayan environment, the characteristic problems that emanate from man-nature interaction and their assess ment and analysis in the context of the complex and fragile ecological background. Through scientific papers, by a large number of authors, including several already. known for their extensive and important contribution to Himalayan research and studies, this collaborative venture purports to embody a realistic interpretation of the basic problems and needs of the rural community in these areas vis-a-vis the current process of planning and development. The synthesis of information derived therefrom can serve as the right basis on which programmes of rural reconstruction and regional development can be based. It is hoped that besides providing useful guidance material -both for theoretical and practical interest of planners, administrators, engineers, environmentalists, researchers and many others, this integrative approach to the multifaceted problems of a unique mountain environment, will add something in its own right.

It was difficult, if not impossible to accomplish this stupendous task without the kind and unfailing support of the authors who have mainly contributed to the process of structuring and shaping the content of this monograph. Their co-operation and help is gratefully acknowledged. Special recognition and thanks are due to Sri Threesh Kapoor for providing photographs and transparencies; Sri Subodh Consul for his kind suggestions, generous help and a keen interest in the publication of this series; Sri K.N. Khan for extending invaluable help in designing the cover and last but not the least, Sri Kamal Dhawan, for his enthusiastic support in getting the manuscript printed within a record time. |
